The Quarries of the Pentelikon Mountain. Monuments and Archaeological Enhancement.

Τhe Pentelikon quarries are the important quarries from which marble was extracted for the construction of Athenian buildings  at all times of Greek history. The fine marble used for the construction of τhe Acropolis cult buildings, including the Parthenon,  was used by Athenian masons at the time of Pericles. This article deals not only with the ancient quarries, but also with the significant roads for the transportation of marble to the SE of the main quarrying source, which was Spilia. A major problem relates to the enhancement of the quarrying area and  the construction of a museum dealing with the history of the quarries, the history of sculpture and  finally, quarrying techniques. The same study deals with the creation of tourist routes along sites of geological and archaeological interest.   A number of roads preserved to the east and west of Spilia  (Kokkinaras and Spilia) belong to roads of lithagogia.  In addition to the principal and well- known road of lithagogia, starting from Spilia and directed towards Chalandri, there is evidence about another road for the transportation of marble from Pentelikon to Kifissia. The road followed the ancient axis connecting Pentelikon with Eleusis.  Remains of this road were also discovered in excavations for the construction of the Attiki Odos at the location of Pelikas, near  the southern entrance leading to the center of Athmonon (Marousi).
